Degree Requirements and Deadlines
There are specific policies which apply to the fulfillment of degree requirements and to the graduation process. Rules and regulations pertaining to the awarding of graduate degrees are listed in the Graduate Catalog.
The specific deadlines relevant to the graduation process are listed in the degree calendar.
Wharton Doctoral Programs Masters Degree Requirements
Coursework
Each Doctoral Program has specific coursework requirements for Masters degree eligibility. Some departments require more than the minimum eight course units required by the University to be completed. Also, some departments require that "specific" courses be completed prior to application for a Masters degree. Please check with the PhD Coordinator in your department about your department's specific coursework requirement for the Masters degree BEFORE applying for the degree.
EXAMINATION REQUIREMENT
All students are required to take and PASS a Preliminary Exam and/or Qualifying Examination. A record of when the exam was taken and the results of the exam must be on file in the Wharton Doctoral Programs Office. Check with the PhD Coordinator in your department to confirm that a copy of the exam results is sent to the Wharton Doctoral Office.
RESEARCH REQUIREMENT
ALL students who apply to receive a Masters Degree must fulfill a research requirement. Wharton Doctoral Programs does NOT require a Masters Thesis. In order to fulfill this requirement, the student must have completed a substantial research paper. Please check with the PhD Coordinator in your department to determine which research paper requirement for your program will fulfill the research requirement for a Masters Degree. You must have the faculty member who supervised and graded the research paper complete the Masters Research Paper Certification Form and return the completed signed form to the Wharton Doctoral Office at least four weeks prior to the deadline date indicated on the Degree Calendar.
Masters Degree Checklist
1. Submit Degree Application to SAS Graduate Division.
2. Exam Results must be on file with Wharton Doctoral Office.
3. Masters Research Paper Certification Form completed and sent to Wharton Doctoral Office.
